Art Print

Art at Woolston

All Art courses are creative courses that help you to think for yourself and give you the opportunity to work with a variety of materials. They encourage visual awareness and appreciation of artistic values, crucial in today’s visual world. The courses develop self-discipline, organisation and a professional approach to work; while allowing individual creative expression and decision-making – These are crucial qualities required in ALL professions. They promote an interest and enjoyment in the subject, providing you with confidence and the means to produce some really exciting work.

There are three different Art options and all offer tremendous specialist support to each individual. We have excellent facilities in all areas e.g. ceramics tools, kilns, printing facilities, specialised textiles resources such as batik and screen print. All areas offer extra one to one support after school and we regularly organise visits to galleries such as Tate Liverpool and the Walker Art Gallery. As well as the amazing opportunity to visit a foreign capital of Art. This year we are spending 5 days in Barcelona to soak up the culture. There are also workshop weekends organised at the Tattenhall centre to extend pupils coursework portfolios.

Art – Construction and pattern

In Class

This really exciting course gives you opportunity to work in three dimensions using materials such as paper and card construction and some wire work. Projects might include – mirror frames, sacred boxes and shrines developing towards body adornment and costume development.

Fine Art – Drawing, Painting & Sculpture

In Class

This is a relatively new course introduced last year by Miss Leavesley, and aims to make drawing, painting and sculpture more exciting and interesting. The course is aimed at those people who mainly enjoy two-dimensional work and have a reasonable drawing ability, (Ask your teacher if you’re not sure) but wouldn’t mind trying a little bit of 3D too! You could work on drawings and paintings ranging from five centimetres to two metres in size. You will learn how to use materials such as graphite, inks, charcoal and chalk, pencil crayon, acrylic paint on canvas, watercolour and anything you can get your hands on at home e.g. emulsion paint, creosote, food colourings. You will also have the opportunity to try some sculpture work using clay but this will only make up one project so don’t worry if you haven’t done it before

Art Textiles

In Class

Art Textiles is quite a new development in the art department, if you are quite a creative person but don’t enjoy the drawing element, as much, this could be the course for you. We look at modern cutting edge fashion designers like Versace, Westwood or McQueen (don’t worry if you don’t know these people yet!) We look at modern fashion designs as well as traditional clothing and accessories. You could make creative corsets, interesting body adornments, even unusual shoes or bags. You will also learn traditional fabric skills like batik, fabric printing and embroidery. If you enjoy working with fabric but want to work creatively this could be the course for you. You will research the designer or theme and use a variety of presentations to show your ideas and designs. You will start to use the sewing machine in a creative and decorative way, it’s really easy when you know how!

At home

Like any other GCSE course there will obviously be homework set on a regular basis, this will be in a variety of formats. Sometimes you will be given sketchbook drawings and tasks to complete. Other times you might be given a couple of weeks to complete a mini project involving research into artists and designers who influence your own work. You could also be asked to finish a main piece of work in your own time. Homework is a really important part of your coursework as it shows the examiner you can think for yourself and develop your ideas in an individual way. You will be set tasks, which address all the exam board criteria so you cannot fail if you complete the work set to the best of your ability.

Course Work

All courses follow the AQA syllabus for Art & Design. Coursework counts for 60% of the final grade. Pupils are required to submit three major coursework projects at the end of the course. Projects will vary depending on which Art specialism pupils opt for.

Exams

The exam is worth 40% of the final grade, this usually takes place at Easter in Year 11 and the paper is given out 4 weeks before the exam takes place. This allows pupils to develop their ideas with guidance and prepare fully before they sit their exam. Pupils will then complete a final piece of practical work in 10 hours of exam time. The 10 hours is normally split into three or four sessions. The nature of the exam means that if pupils are organised and prepare properly they cannot fail.

Keys to success

Interest, determination, and commitment to the subject are the most important qualities needed. You will need some creative ability but speak to your teacher if you are not sure you have the skills because sometimes we can see potential where you can’t. You will need to work hard like any subject but you do not have to be another Leonardo Da Vinci to achieve success.
