Every day we communicate in lots of different ways with lots of different people and we use a variety of means to do so. This ability to communicate - read, write, speak and listen - is vital to all of us throughout our lives. English provides the opportunity to develop important skills in communication which will be of real use, not just now, but also in the future; not just in school but also in employment and in every aspect of our social life.

The English Department at Woolston has a suite of rooms on C block corridor.
We work closely with examining bodies to provide teaching geared for success in public examinations.
In the recent past we have had visiting theatre groups in school to give performances to support examination texts.
We have run a variety of visits including outings to theatres and the cross-curricular Battlefields visit in conjunction with the History Department

In Class

All pupils will cover a broad range of material in English lessons. The vast majority will take two GCSE’s – ‘English’ and ‘English Literature’ in an integrated course. Eventually a decision will be made about whether to enter for the Higher Tier (Grades A*-D) or the Foundation Tier (C-G).

Some pupils may be entered for the English Certificate which offers a national qualification via 100% coursework. The GCSE course involves reading and writing a variety of literature from non-fiction to fiction, from Shakespeare to modern drama, from pre-1914 poetry to modern poets. (An Anthology of poetry is provided but pupils are usually asked to contribute towards the cost of the modern novel chosen for study.) Pupils will learn to use a variety of techniques in their own writing, bearing in mind the purpose and audience for any given communication
At home
Pupils will be expected to read set texts and plan and draft essays which are essential part of their coursework submission. During the course pupils are likely to receive a variety of printed material which will need to be used and retained for revision in the period before the final papers in Year 11.
