Science Print

Science is a strong subject at Woolston. Staffed by 6 qualified science teachers, with enthusiastic and dedicated leadership, the department regularly achieves results above the national and local averages. 7 fully equipped laboratories with a rolling programme of refurbishment, specialist technicians and excellent ICT facilities ensure we have the facilities and expertise to push students of all abilities to their full potential.

In the lower school, science groups are taught in ability-matched groups. We follow a course which we have designed to fit around the QCA framework for science at key stage three. Resources from Exploring Science (Longman) complement those of our own to provide a variety of activities which suit pupils of all ability ranges and preferred learning styles.

Key Stage 4

At key stage four we have traditionally followed a dual-award or separate sciences programme, taught in subject specialist groups for biology, chemistry and physics. We also offer a vocational science programme, with increased emphasis on real-life experiences and skills. We have completed the transition to the new programme of study for key stage 4, which was introduced from September 2006. This is an exciting opportunity to rejuvenate the upper school science curriculum, and we are enjoying the new challenges this will bring.
